This course has been intentionally designed to eliminate the most common struggles that English speakers encounter when approaching Japanese. I’ve poured my years of experience mastering Japanese, living in Japan and teaching Japanese to other English speakers to create lessons that allow learners to (1) master particles and (2) Japanese pronunciation, and (3) learn to manipulate the language for themselves rather than memorising set phrases.
-
Absolutely! These lessons are designed for those who have never studied Japanese before, including the Japanese scripts, hiragana and katakana.
-
Content-wise the lessons are exactly the same as what students learn in my (A) Complete beginner’s Japanese tutoring group! The only difference is that these lessons are recorded videos, whereas those in my tutoring groups are held live. This way you’re in control of how much you study and when.
-
There are five lessons, each between 40-60 minutes long. There is also a homework task after each lesson that should take anywhere between 20-40 minutes to complete.
The benefit of taking recorded lessons rather than live lessons is that you get to work at your own pace and fit your studies into a schedule that suits you.
I’d recommend setting aside at least 2 hrs a week to study. At this pace, it would take 5 weeks to complete the course. That being said, if you’re able to spend more time than this studying in a week, you could complete the course in as little as 1-2 weeks.
-
These lessons are designed to be interactive. There are both tasks for you to complete throughout the lessons whilst watching along and to complete after the lessons.
Homeworks range from tasks such as learning one’s self-introduction by heart, writing some example sentences of one’s own, to fill in the blanks exercises for practising particles etc.
In the case that there are set answers, I provide an answer sheet. For homeworks where you write your own sentences, I would check these for you. Homework tasks may take between 20 and 40 minutes to complete.
-
Yes! Students taking the recorded lessons receive all the same support that someone taking a live lesson would have.
You can submit homework, receive feedback, and ask questions to me, your teacher, through email. You’ll then receive either written feedback, or, if your question requires a longer explanation, a short video explanation where I talk to camera.

JLPT is the standardised Japanese learning proficiency test. Levels range from N5 to N1. N5 tests beginner’s Japanese. N1 tests advanced Japanese.
These lessons will teach you the basics required for the JLPT N5 test. These lessons do not cover all of the content tested in the JLPT N5, but the content covered is certainly applicable to the N5. These lessons are designed to build you a strong foundation and help you develop learning habits that will make your learning journey efficient, smooth and painless right from the get go.
