Hi there!
I’m Rosie and I tutor Japanese language online to beginner and intermediate learners.
I started my language learning journey roughly 9 years ago when I began studying Japanese by myself in my bedroom in London using apps, youtube and any other resources I could get my hands on.
I moved on to learning with a tutor, and then on to university where I completed my degree in Japanese language (and Film Studies). I studied Japanese language and culture both in the Uk and at Osaka University in Japan. I then wrote my dissertation on techniques used to translate Japanese Post-war feminist literature into English, earning me my first class degree.
I now live and work in Tokyo, Japan and share my journey to fluency as well as Japanese language learning tips online!
Services
What lessons are on offer…
1-1 Lessons
The beauty of private tutoring is that the sessions are specially tailored to your needs! Whether that be learning new grammar, writing skills, speaking practice or listening skills, it’s up to you. Open to complete beginners through to lower intermediate level learners (N5-N3). Recommended for those seeking speedy progression and/or individual guidance.
Group Lessons
Aimed at complete beginners and those who have studied just a little Japanese already, there are three groups to choose from. We meet once a week for five weeks for 1 hour long lessons and complete weekly homework tasks. Best for those on a budget and/or those wanting a taster of Japanese.
Free Resources
I regularly film and upload short video lessons and clips sharing tips on studying Japanese, travelling Japan and Japanese culture. Do follow me on instgram and Tiktok (below) to view these!
Recorded Video Lessons
For self-driven, independent learners I also offer recorded video lessons catering to complete beginners.
Speaking Japanese with Natives
I was approached in the street in Tokyo by a woman running the youtube channel, Japanstreettalk. She interviewed me about my experiences of Japanese culture and culture shock. Check out the video below to watch that conversation!
Being a foreigner in Tokyo, you’ll often be ‘street-snapped’ by photographers looking to take photos of people with unusual style or features different to those commonly seen in the Japanese population.
To the right is one of those videos in which ‘アノニマス/Anonymous’ on Tiktok approached my friends and I while we were walking in Shibuya.
